EFAP Podcast Episode 2: Breaking Down Myths About Communication
After a first episode focused on creativity and intergenerational dialogue, the EFAP podcast returns with a new edition. In this second episode, two guests (one current student and one alumna) share insights into their personal and professional journeys through the world of communication.
Two voices, two journeys, one passion in the making
For this episode, Steve Dias Pedro, student in the MBA Specialized in Digital Marketing & Business and host of the podcast, welcomes:
• Camille Rochon, 5th-year student in the MBA Specialized in Digital Marketing & Business
• Lucie Mahé, EFAP alumna (Class of 2021), now freelance in social media
Like in the first episode, the podcast opens with a true/false quiz where the guests share fun facts and unexpected anecdotes. From a connection with Thomas Pesquet to their mutual love for music and Hugo Décrypte, Camille and Lucie offer a refreshing take on the world of communication.
When asked when they knew they wanted to work in communication, their answers are clear.
“I actually push back against the idea of a ‘declic’, that moment of sudden clarity. I never had one. Just because you don’t have a strong calling or a clear path doesn’t mean you won’t succeed. You get good by doing”, explains Lucie.
She adds, “It’s once I started working and earning a living through communication that I thought, this is where I’m meant to be. I don’t doubt it anymore.”
Camille shares that she started out studying economics and management before switching to communication in search of more creativity : “At EFAP, from the very first year, I realized I could explore and try out so many things. The great thing about communication is that you can do anything.”
They agree on one thing: passion for communication doesn’t happen overnight. It grows through hands-on experience, real-life projects and meaningful encounters.
Paris vs regional campuses: time to rethink the divide
With Camille studying at EFAP Paris and Lucie having studied at EFAP Bordeaux, the conversation naturally turns to the idea of a divide between the capital and regional campuses. Lucie shares that studying outside Paris can actually drive you to do more.
“When you’re not in Paris, it feels like everything happens there. So maybe you push harder, you’re more determined, because it feels far away and you think you won’t have access to the right contacts.”
She also highlights EFAP’s role in bridging the gap : “EFAP really helps with that. They open doors beyond your campus. During my master’s, there were a lot of masterclasses and we saw that opportunities weren’t limited to Bordeaux.”
Camille recalls her arrival in Paris as a very intense time : “I packed my weekends and evenings full. I wanted to attend events, meet people, interview professionals, whatever I could do to learn. I was really thirsty for knowledge.”
She also points out that Paris can be an exhausting city, but incredibly stimulating. Bottom line: whether you’re in Bordeaux, Lyon or Paris, what matters most is your level of commitment, and the EFAP network, which exists on every campus.
The EFAP network as a common thread
When asked about their most meaningful professional connections, both guests naturally mention the EFAP network. Camille stresses its importance at every stage of her journey.
“At every step of my professional experience, there was EFAP and alumni. I always made sure to reach out. They respond easily and their advice is incredibly valuable.”
She adds that student projects are often the perfect excuse to connect with professionals : “Whenever I had an assignment, whether a thesis or a report, it was a great reason to approach people and ask for interviews. And that opens doors.”
When it comes to their favorite EFAP memories, Lucie recalls the job dating events organized on campus : “I got my internship at UGC Bordeaux thanks to those meetings. These kinds of professional exercises really prepare you for what the working world is like.”
Camille highlights the battle-style competitions : “Once you work in an agency, you realize it’s exactly like a client pitch. That’s why it’s such great training.”
Both credit these experiences with building their confidence and sense of legitimacy.
Say yes, try things, move forward
The episode wraps up with a segment on social media, online harassment, and a Gen Z vs Alumni quiz full of pop culture references. This final part reminds us just how essential it is to understand generational and digital codes when working in communication.
Before the end, both guests offer advice for students. Lucie speaks to those who are still unsure about their path : “If you don’t know what you want to do yet, don’t be afraid. Just dive in. Even if your first job doesn’t suit you, you’ll bounce back. We often have a skewed view of the job market, but you’ll always find people who connect with you and give you a chance.”
Camille’s message is equally clear :“During your studies, say yes to everything. We’re lucky to have time to test things. No matter the field, trying lots of things helps you figure out your path.”
